Now that you have written your outline, it is time to turn it into an actual paper. How do you do that? Here are some tips.
First, write your introduction. Think in general terms about your topic. Then, narrow it down to your statement of problem and thesis. Study the following example over my topic of erosion.
Earth is an ever-changing planet. Obviously, major events such as volcanoes and
floods modify the earths surface quickly, causing mountains to move and rivers to
change their boundaries. However, some forces change the planet in more subtle ways.
One of these forces, erosion, causes minute changes on a daily basis. How can erosion be
prevented? Are certain types of soil more prone to erosion than others? The addition of
rocks or clay to regular soil should prevent erosion.
Next, look at the outline of your paper to help you write the body paragraphs. For instance, if this were the first part of my outline
I. Body
A. Explanation of erosion
1. Causes
a. Natural
b. Man-made
my body paragraph would begin like this:
Erosion is caused by several factors. It can be a natural process brought about by wind or
water (Favis-Mortlock). Another common cause of soil erosion is area home and business
construction (Why Should We Worry About Soil Erosion?).
Notice that the paragraph begins with an uncited topic sentence. These citations directly correspond with the first part of my Works Cited entries. Use your note cards and make sure to cite some information from every Works Cited entry. Print off a copy of your Works Cited page, too. See the next page for an updated version of mine.
Finally, after you finish writing the body paragraphs, craft a conclusion. Restate your hypothesis in different words and then summarize each main point from the body in a sentence. Write a universal statement for the last sentence.
Show me the rough draft and revise then it. If you do not have these stages completed by Thursday, you must bring them to me Friday along with your final draft. Make sure to bring your final draft and any parts you have not shown me in class to me by 3:30 on Friday, December 11.
